Wagrain is part of the huge Ski Amadé with 860 km of slopes, all on the same ski pass.
The ski system in Wagrain is based on either the “beginner mountain” Grafenberg or the Flying Mozart lift, from where you can explore slopes of all categories in the vast ski area. In 2013, the new G-LINK opened, which mean you no longer have to take the ski bus between Griesskareck and Grafenberg. It has been revolutionary for Wagrain. The ski area is now completely coherent. If you are coming from St. Johan and wants to go to Flachau, you now don’t have to spend your time waiting for the bus and then going to the valley, you just go with the G-LINK. This means that you can take some long day trips, where you spend the time efficiently skiing and getting around on the wonderful, well-groomed slopes, for which the area is known.
Wagrain also offers skiing for experienced skiers. Here you will find dream slopes for carving kings. Big, wide and well-groomed pistes with a good view, so you can completely unwind. A morning in Wagrain with a pair of perfect carving skis will be on top of everyone’s list of good skiing experiences, maybe even all experiences. We recommend the World Cup piste in Zauchensee and Herman Maier piste in Flachau.
You don’t go to Wagrain for the off-piste but if the snow conditions are good, you can easily find a good off-piste anyway. Of course, there are always possibilities between the slopes when the snow is new. If you want a really good off-piste day, consider taking an excursion to Flachauwinkl and Zauchensee. Here you will find plenty of good opportunities.
An alternative is St. Johann, where there are also some “secret” places.
In addition to the fun park in Wagrain Winter World, Austria’s largest snow park, Absolut Park, is just around the corner in Flachauwinkl. It is huge! Whether you are a beginner or Red Bull Pro Rider, you can find challenges that fits your level.
A great idea if you have children, who want to try freestyle is to talk to the ski school about getting some lessons. It is of great value. First, you will develop much faster and you get insights into the parks safety rules and get guided through the park by someone who knows what it’s all about. It is both safe for the children and for the parents.
Due to its location, the valley between Wagrain and Kleinarl and further south is covered in snow most of the winter. This makes Wagrain a popular place among cross-country skiers. All the trails have both a classic track and a skating track. Especially popular is the trail passing by Jägersee, the loop between Wagrain, Kleinarl and Tauernloipe. Along the slopes there are “water holes” where you can buy wet and dry and restore. If you only want to go one way, you can always take the bus back or forth. In Wagrain there is even a beginner loop where you can get started with the cozy sport.
In addition, the local ski schools can all offer lessons for beginners in cross-country skiing.
Wagrain is all about coziness and it is probably the reason why so many return year after year. The hotels offer a typical Austrian atmosphere with its wooden facades underneath the layer of snow on the roofs. No matter where you stay in Wagrain, you are close to the lift and the cozy city. Even though the food at Hotel Kirchboden is really good, you also have the possibility to go out and eat at one of the restaurants in the city. Here you can decide which local specialties you want to taste. The Austrian cuisine is good and exciting. TIP: Try the Oberforsthof alm in Alpendorf. You should definitely also try the legendary after ski. The newly renovated Kuhstall or Kuhberg Alm are worth a visit and here you can enjoy a beer or a flügeln accompanied by “Hansi aus Tirol” sounding from the speakers. The party here continues until late into the night.
An alternative to after ski, if you have your children with you, is a visit to the large water park, Wasserwelt Wagrain. That is, if there are enough energy after the days’ unforgettable experiences in the snow.
When you stay at Hotel Kirchboden you will have 3 hours daily access to Wasserwelt Wagrain.
